I'll admit that I wasn't happy at first to be assigned to a writing team for an important report. As a veteran engineer in the company, I'm more comfortable working on my own project, where I have more personal control and accountability. But after a few meetings with the team, I began to see one of the advantages of group writing. Even though our specific work was writing a document, our more general work was getting to know and trust each other. Until I worked with this team, I had little to do with employees outside of Engineering. Now I know how other people from other departments think and work. When our document is eventually published in the company, I'll be in a position to explain or even defend it to the people I work with in Engineering.

'We're wasting time by trying to work together.' Writing team must learn to value the time spent in comparing ideas and coordinating effort. The time devoted to the process of team writing is as important as the individual time given to the product of putting words together on paper. The company wants the eventual document to speak for a consensus in the company, not just an individual. That consensus can be forged only by patient, active participation by team members as they share insights, resolve conflicts, and coordinate work activities.

As a writing team, we have agreed to avoid bureaucratic style commonly found in this company's formal reports. Instead, we will emulate the direct, concrete and appropriately informal style found in such business publication as Fortune, Business Week, and Forbes. Specifically, we will each strive for short sentences and paragraphs, common dictions, active voice, and frequent headings. Because our work will be read by a wide audience, we will avoid jargon and unnecessarily complicated charts and graphs.
